My Journey to Africa from South to North, and Everything in-between

July 31 - August 1

Our two days in the Masai Mara were beautiful beyond words. My sickness aside, we all had an incredible time. We wound up seeing four of the big five, plus a cheetah (the rhino still eluded us), got lost in the park and drove around in the dark for two hours (and almost hit a lion on the road), and were basically in a state of awe for most all of it.

If you’ve watched Discovery Channel’s/BBC’s “Planet Earth” then you’ve heard of the Great Migration - one of the natural wonders of the world. Every year around July/August masses of wildebeest and zebra move from the Serengeti plains to the Masai Mara to find food, and then move back down again around October. We literally had to drive through herds of these animals the entire day, and even got to see a few cross the river. It was breathtaking.

The car also ran into a little problem in the middle of the park (the foot step on the passenger side came un-hinged), and so we of course had to hop out and fix it, in the middle of a wildebeest herd. Who would’ve thought? The man with us in the picture is Josephetu, our guide and the campsite owner. Great guy, and gave us a really cheap campsite.

Still, pictures do better than words, and there are of course a lot more where these came from. Definitely an experience I will never forget.
